About NIBS

Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies (NIBS) is the reengineering with a slight variation in name of Nagarjuna Buddhist Exact Methods (NIEM) which was established as a Buddhist Research Institute in March 1980 by my most respected father Mr. Min Bahadur Shakya with a view to enlighten Nepalese people about their own form of Buddhism, its philosophy and practice. NIBS was formally registered in the Ministry of Industry, Government of Nepal as a Buddhist company. Its government registered number is 160226/073/074. Newar Buddhism is a unique tradition in itself. The nature of this tradition was observed centuries ago in Nalanda and Vikramashila Universities. Tibetan Buddhism was based on the same tradition. It has retained all the lineage and traditions of the Siddhas of India, Nepal as well as Tibet. For reinstatement of the glorious traditions and lineage of Newar Buddhism we have to seek the support from the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

A growing library with rare Buddhist cannon and books.

Our demos are one of a kind: we only offer full concept demos with multiple pages that show whole projects, unlike others who only include a single page and call that a demo 😉

You can import them with a single click, they are easily adaptable to your needs and you can chose from a variety of layouts and niche designs. In addition to that you can also use the demo images used in our demo for your own project!

There are several approaches when it comes to content editing but we consider our Advanced Layout Editor one of the best.

We prefer a backend editor to one that is placed on the frontend, because there is less clutter and the layout process is usually much easier.

However, there are merits to a frontend editor. The biggest one is that you can see how the element your are editing looks like at any given time.

This is why we have implemented a live preview window for our content elements. So now you got the best of both worlds: easy layout building and visual content editing 🙂

Our Collaboration

NIBS currently collaboration with three preservation partners.

The Digital Sanskrit Buddhist Canon (DSBC)

The University of the West is engaged in a ground-breaking project to gather, digitize and distribute the original Sanskrit scriptures of the Buddhist faith. Although Buddhism disappeared from its Indian homeland about eight centuries ago, many of its sacred texts are still preserved in Nepal. Since 2003, with the collaboration of Kathmandu’s Nagarjuna Institute, these texts are again being brought to the world.

Rare Sanskrit Buddhist Manuscript Preservation Project

The University of the West, with the collaboration of Nagarjuna Institute, initiated the digitizing with the Buddhist Manuscript Preservation Project through scanning the manuscripts and digitally preserving them from January 2009. Thus far, we have digitized six hundred Nepalese Buddhist manuscripts of the 17th century onwards kept in different private collections and the Akṣeśvara Mahāvihāra library collections. In the Kathmandu Valley, there are several manuscripts in private collections that have not yet been digitized and microfilmed.

The Asian Legacy Library

At present, ALL and its partner institution in Kathmandu, the Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies, are engaged in two projects dedicated to the preservation of texts that form the core of sacred and social life for the Newar Buddhist community of the Kathmandu Valley.

The first focuses on the Nine Sutra (nava-sūtra) collection of Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. Sometimes reverently called the Nine Jewels, these texts heralded the rise of Universal Vehicle (Mahāyāna) Buddhism in India 2,000 years ago, and today remain central to Mahayana Buddhist theory and practice from northern India to Japan.

The NIBS Great Compassion Fund

Compassion Fund

The NIBS Great Compassion Fund is one of the activities of NIBS. It is a transformed version of Great Compassion Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims launched in May, 2015 to provide relief materials for the earthquake victims. It is a Mahayana ideal to benefit sentient beings in any possible manner. So we chose this title “Great Compassion” for this project also because it was chosen by our (myself and my brother Miroj’s) late father, Min Bahadur Shakya, when he was alive. He told us that he was strongly willing to start charity work under that name. So we want to pay tribute or honor the memory and vision of our late father by continuing his dream projects. This ideal has inspired us to work for the benefit of the Buddhist monks, nuns who are really in desperate financial needs for their health treatment, education, practice. It also helps the extremely poor people. We invite the prospective compassionate donors to gain merit by sponsoring this cause.
